Soapstone casting is nice. It offers solid results providing you can carve the mold. So what do you do when you want to cast something that you can't carve? Sand Casting!

In a nutshell, casting with sand gives you a medium that is reuseable, inexpensive, and forgiving. Here I will document my trials with sand casting.

First we will list the materials you will need:

  1. Greensand: This is a mixture of fine sand, bentonite (powdered clay binder) and about 6% water. The mixture is mulled to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  2. Mold frame: This is two parts. the top called the cope and the bottom called the drag.
  3. Parting Dust: This is used to keep the mold halves from sticking together and to help release the positive from the mold.
  4. Rammer: A block of wood or other solid object to pack the sand in the mold.
